Volunteer Spotlight: Carolyn Streva

Serving Our Kids volunteer supervisor Carolyn Streva knows how it feels to be hungry. Born in the Philippines, Carolyn grew up in poverty and lived with her mother, brother and sister in a modest 10-by-10-foot room with a dirt floor. Food was scarce, and there were days when the family went without eating. Whenever possible, Carolyn would visit a nearby church to ask for food or money.

Every Christmas, her mother would prepare a simple meal of spaghetti with sauce, that brought joy and comfort to her. She remembers vividly, “Even now, the smell of cooking spaghetti makes me feel rich. It reminds me of Christmas.”

Carolyn’s lifelong passion for serving others began at the age of seven, inspired by her mother’s generosity. “She had nothing, but she would give you the shirt off her back,” Carolyn recalls. One year, when the nuns gave her small candy canes, she chose to share them with other neighborhood children in need rather than keeping all of them for herself and her siblings. As a young student, she loved helping others and fundraising, happily selling fruitcakes that few wanted, simply because she enjoyed raising money for a good cause.

While still living in the Philippines, Carolyn was sponsored through the Pearl S. Buck Foundation. “It felt like God was watching over me,” she says. The sponsorship allowed her to attend a private Catholic school, receive dental care, and benefit from much-needed donations. She still treasures a letter from her sponsors, Mr. and Mrs. Mann of the United States, written when she was nine years old. “Their kindness and generosity have stayed with me all my life,” she reflects. “That’s probably why I’ve kept their letter all these years.”

In 1977, Carolyn’s stepfather brought the family to the United States, where they lived in Navy housing. Having access to simple comforts, food on the table and an indoor bathroom left a lasting impression. “Those experiences may be why I never take anything for granted,” she says.

For the past 11 years, Carolyn has been a dedicated volunteer with the Serving Our Kids Foundation. For the last four years, she has served as a Weekend Meal Bagging Supervisor every other Tuesday. She keeps the food bins stocked, maintains a positive atmosphere with music, and ensures the process runs smoothly for all volunteers. Carolyn also trains new volunteers, assists with fundraising events, and continually spreads the word about supporting Serving Our Kids through volunteering and donations.

Outside of her volunteer work, Carolyn is a Realtor with 23 years of experience in the Las Vegas/Henderson area and currently serves as Chair of the Las Vegas REALTORS® Community Outreach Committee. She recommended Serving Our Kids as one of two charities to receive committee support in 2025.

Committee members participate in monthly meal-bagging sessions, and when volunteers bring their children, Carolyn takes the opportunity to teach them how these meals help kids who may not have enough to eat, instilling in them the importance of compassion and service. The LVR Community Outreach Committee has also organized fundraising events, including bowling and golf tournaments, to support the foundation.

Through all of her experiences, Carolyn has remained an optimist. “I never let being poor or hungry define who I am, and I never thought of myself as a victim,” she says. “I can’t give just one reason why I love volunteering. For me, it’s the feeling of giving back. When you make a positive impact on a child’s life, they grow up differently. That’s what keeps me going.”

Volunteer Spotlight:
200 Meal Bagging Volunteers

More than 200 regular volunteers are the heart, soul, mind and muscles that bring SOK’s mission to life. They participate five to six times each school year and help with anything from meal bagging and delivering meal bags to schools, to working at SOK events.

Serving Our Kids proudly recognizes two special groups of volunteers – SOK volunteer supervisors and SOK meal bag drivers – who literally keep our operations rolling from our warehouse to the schools we serve.

SOK has 10 Volunteer Supervisors who keep our meal-bagging motor running smoothly and efficiently. They educate new volunteers about SOK’s mission and operations. They make sure our meal-bagging teams are fully fueled with thousands of food items. And they ensure the quality of each weekend meal bag before it leaves our warehouse.

Without our Volunteer Supervisors, we would have to hire paid employees to perform these critical duties. And we simply could not create enough weekend meal bags to help feed more than 4,000 food-insecure kids each week during the school year.

All the work of our volunteer baggers and supervisors would be for naught if we couldn’t deliver our weekend meal bags to the schools and, ultimately, to the students who need them. That takes a team of 30 volunteer delivery drivers.

Our volunteer drivers deliver thousands of weekend meal bags 40 different schools throughout the Las Vegas Valley. Between two and four times a month, they donate their time, their vehicles and the gas to make sure each meal bag reaches its destination on time.

Twice a year, SOK asks our participating schools to give us feedback about our services. More than half of the schools that reply mention how much they appreciate our drivers and their vital role in SOK’s operations. They also mention the close personal relationship between many of our drivers and school administrators. They’re more than drivers. They’re SOK ambassadors.

Thank You Volunteer Drivers!

A Random Act of Awesome

A Random Act of Awesome

We value each and every one of our volunteer Crusaders. Without them, SOK couldn’t even hope to fulfill our mission to help end child hunger in Southern Nevada. We know the schools and the kids we serve appreciate them, too. But it’s rare that other people in the community recognize our volunteers for the critical work they do.

On March 13th, Dawn Langdon finished her meal bag deliveries and stopped at Trader Joe’s in Henderson. The cashier noticed Dawn’s uniform and asked about Serving Our Kids.

“Dawn has been a fantastic volunteer for more than two years,” said CEO Laurie Tanakaya. “She’s one of our regular drivers and takes meal bags to several schools each week. She fosters strong partnerships with these schools. She volunteers at our events. Any time we have a need, Dawn jumps in to help.”

As Dawn explained who we are and what we do, she saw the young grocery bagger named Cullen was also listening, and kinda staring at her. When he suddenly turned and walked away, Dawn thought she’d said something that Cullen didn’t like or maybe he had a “difference of opinion.”

Shortly after Dawn left the store, she heard a voice call out, “Wait!” and saw Cullen running to catch up with her. Had she left something at the checkout counter? No. He handed Dawn a bouquet of beautiful flowers and said, “Thank you for doing what you do.”

“I was speechless,” she wrote on social media. “Thank you Cullen for putting a smile on my face and a lil faith in my heart”

“We are so thankful Dawn is an SOK volunteer,” Laurie said. “And so thankful to Cullen for recognizing how special she is.”
